My life was changed in 2001 when my son was born and his birthmother placed him in my arms to have, hold and love forever.  If you stop and think about it for a minute, most of us have a connection to adoption in some way, shape or form.  There is the obvious connection if you have adopted a child into your family or placed a child into an adoption plan, but many of us also have friends, neighbors, spouses or co-workers who are adult adoptees or birthparents too.  Whether domestic or international, open or closed, agency, social services or private, November is a wonderful month to celebrate your ties to adoption or recognize those special people in your life with a connection to adoption!

 

As an adoptive mom, I am proud to tell you that in the US, November is celebrated as National Adoption Awareness Month and the Adoption Board of iVillage will be CELEBRATING all month!  We hope to share stories, educate each other and talk about ways to increase awareness about adoption.  Please stop by to participate and join in the fun sometime this month! Or, if your interest is on a more focused area of adoption, visit the boards for International Adoption, Korean Adoption, Foster Parenting, or Birth Parents.

The History of Adoption Month

In May 1976, Massachusetts Governor Michael Dukakis issued the first state Adoption Week proclamation, and President Ford then officially proclaimed the week in a letter to the North American Council on Adoptable Children (NACAC) conference held later that year. As years went on, Adoption Week came to be observed during the week of Thanksgiving in November.  In 1990, NACAC decided to expand opportunities for raising awareness, and began advertising Adoption Week as National Adoption Awareness Month (November). The idea has quickly caught on, and Adoption Month has been celebrated ever since.
