When you hear cystic fibrosis (CF) do you think “lung disease?”  CF is the second-leading cause of chronic lung disease, but it affects other organs as well, most notably the pancreas.  Digestive problems are almost always the first symptoms to arise for someone with CF.

 

May is Cystic Fibrosis Awareness Month.  Why should you be aware?  About ten percent of CF patients are diagnosed after age 18, as their symptoms didn't come together sooner. The sooner treatment is started, the better.  Some common early signs are constant hunger but little weight gain; smelly, greasy bowel movements; and frequent respiratory illnesses.

 

There are about 1,000 new cases of cystic fibrosis diagnosed each year.  If you or anyone you know is struggling with the diagnosis or possibility of CF, I encourage you to visit us at the Cystic Fibrosis Board and check out the information at the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation’s website.  In addition to finding lots of support on the message board, you’ll find members who are happy to share information, suggestions and their own stories.  Finding out someone you love has cystic fibrosis can be devastating, but after that, there’s hope.
