April 24, 2006

I'm thrilled to be writing my first ScooPP newsletter ever and on a topic that is both near and dear to my heart -- immunizations. April 22nd through April 29th has been designated National Infant Immunization Week by the Centers for Disease Control to promote the benefits of immunizations and to focus on the importance of immunizing infants against vaccine-preventable diseases by age two. As a pediatrician in private practice, I feel immunizations are an important part of childhood, because these diseases are preventable. Now, I almost never see the devastating consequences of diseases like pertussis (whooping cough), haemophilus influenza B (HiB), and polio. I lead the Vaccine Support board and see questions about immunizations come up on the Child Health board as well.

This topic also seems timely given the current outbreak of mumps in the Midwestern states. This includes my home state, Oklahoma, which was recently added as a new message board. I've been sporting this year's logo for National Infant Immunization Week in my signature line: "Love them. Protect them. Immunize them." Please feel free to contact me if you are looking for a guest-of-the-week on your message board just as the CLs of the Deciding to Try and June 2006 Expecting Club have requested recently. I'd be happy to oblige!

Important Announcements

From Caryn:
As Community Leaders, your members look to you for advice and support on many topics, not to mention the latest iVillage updates and assistance with our features. Members who have subscribed to one of the Message Boards Plus packages will often have questions about their subscriptions and may turn to you for help. Since you're all avid Express Yourself users, more often than not you're able to answer the basics with no trouble. But what about those trickier problems, account issues and subscription questions? For common issues, you may be able to find the answer in our Customer Support pages or by looking through the Cafe and team boards. Beyond that, it's generally best to suggest the member contact Customer Support directly. By doing so, the member will get one-on-one assistance and troubleshooting and we'll be able to track the problem in our system. Here's a quick guide for your reference: After a member signs up for a package, she should see the features right away (she may need to refresh her browser or log out/back in in some cases). Remember, the features will only appear if you log in using a member name associated with the email account that was used to subscribe.

If a member still doesn't see the features, she should check her email (at the email address she used to subscribe). She should have a "welcome email" within half an hour. The welcome email contains information about the various features and how to find assistance. If she doesn't have a welcome email, it's possible that it is being filtered by a spam/bulk mail filter.

If she needs more assistance, it's best to suggest that she write to the paid subscribers email address in the welcome letter. This will ensure she receives one-on-one help and in-depth troubleshooting. If you have a subscriber that is able to log in but is having a problem using one of the paid features, she can either write to the paid subscribers address or post to the
Premium Subscribers help board. (Please remember this isn’t a board for CLs, since you have access to your CMs and the Café boards.) More information on managing a premium account can also be found in the Customer Support area.

Blog:  Sanity and the Solo Mom

Being a solo mom is living with the knowledge that no one will ever love or be enthralled with your child as much as you are.  I live all those "Honey, look at what the baby's doing!" moments knowing that I can share them with grandparents and friends and here on this blog, but they will never be meaningful in the same way. And that is one facet of what it is like to be a single parent. Probably the hardest one.  On the other hand,  I know that while I will always be the "bad cop", I will never not be the favourite parent.  After all, only I hold the keys to the ice cream.

Playing the Self-Esteem Game

Can you increase self-confidence by playing a computer game for five minutes a day? Research shows people may be able to boost self-esteem through practice. Fear of rejection makes us overlook positive signals from others while we zero in on any sign of disapproval. This game teaches us to ignore critical feedback and focus on the positive.

Does your self-esteem need a boost? Play now! See if you can find the friendly face in the crowd.
