I’ve
recently discovered that cooking with my four-year old is a lot
of fun. Up until now, cooking with Grace involved her
tearing our pantry apart after being shooed away from the oven
and me having to chase her out of the kitchen.
Then recently while we were shopping at the grocery store, out
of the blue she announced “I want to make a pizza, Mommy!
I want the two of us to make it together.” It
occurred to me at that moment that by always chasing her out of
the kitchen not only was I missing out on a big opportunity to
spend extra quality time with my daughter, but that this could
also be the way to keep little hands busy and out of trouble!
We finished shopping and went home with our pizza ingredients.
We pre-heated the oven, prepared the crust, and then she helped
me carefully spread the pizza sauce and sprinkle the cheese.
I agreed (with a goodly dose of trepidation) that she could add
whatever pizza toppings she wanted, then we popped it into the
oven and 12 minutes later our masterpiece was ready for
consumption: a pepperoni, hot dog and green grapes pizza.
Yes, you heard me right- grapes! But as strange as it
sounds the pizza actually wasn’t all half-bad, and even more
importantly we had great time putting it together as well as a
new weekly family ritual.
